Dear Community Supporter: The time has come, it's long overdue. The American Legion Post 76 in Port Orford, in conjunction with the Vietnam Veterans of America, the Marine Corp League, Merchant Marines, Coast Guard, Disabled American Veterans, and the Veterans of Foreign War, are all working together for a permanent Curry County Veterans Memorial. (CCVM) On September 30, 2009, a meeting was held in Gold Beach, to discuss the possibilities with all branches of the Armed Forces represented. On November 17, 2009, at our regular American Legion meeting, a motion was made by our rank and file members that it is indeed time to act. It passed with 100 percent yea; a Curry County Veterans Memorial will be built. Each city within the County will be represented by a member of the CCVM. Although we are in the preliminary stage, we will keep you abreast of our progress via emails and/or the local media. Of course, without your help we are doomed to fail. In order for the CCVM to submit grants, we must show the community supports the program financially. The amounts of the grants are in direct relationship to local donations. Sincerely, Phil Colozzi, Commander Post 76

CCVM UPDATE January 10, 2010 Curry County Vets: There has been much dissention in Curry County the past several months among the Veterans Service Organizations, (VSO) regarding the Veterans Memorial. (The AL, MCL, VVA, VFW are VSO’s) It’s not the majority, but everyone is entitled to voice their opinion. Some have internal problems with personality differences and don’t see eye to eye on many issues. All this is common Knowledge. From my discussions, one of the main objections to the memorial is location. The South does not want the memorial in the North and of course, some in the North want the memorial here and only here. The second is "Who’s in charge." There is no trust between the VSO’s, so even the financial control is an issue. Third, the investors concern is whether any of the VSO’s will remain stable over the years. They want to be certain the money will be protected and spent as intended. They want the future maintenance considered, and who would be responsible. In other words, the program to establish a Curry County Veterans Memorial (CCVM) was dead on arrival even before it started. The following adjustments were made to prevent failure. After working with and understanding more of the controversy between the parties involved, it seemed appropriate to have someone neutral in an official capacity, including an organization that isn’t associated with any VSO’s. For that purpose I contacted Mr. Errol Roberts, the manager of the Port in Gold Beach, to be the Financial Officer for CCVM. This alone will give us credibility. Plus, the Port has a non-profit status. I’ve asked Mr. Roberts if the CCVM can hang their hat on the Port’s non-profit status until our status is approved. He agreed in principal, only if approved by the board, thus neutralizing another major issue. Understand, this is all in the negotiating stages; no final decision will be reached until a CCVM board of directors is in place and voted on. To reach that goal, one official person from each of the VSO’s has agreed to be a member of the board of Directors of the CCVM. They in turn have selected two or more from their membership to join as board members. When the board of 15 to 20 is complete they will meet in Gold Beach at the senior center to discuss all issues collectively. From that point on, ALL decisions regarding the memorial are made by the Board. Copies of the minutes will be sent to all who request it. However, ALL Curry County Vets, not just members of the VSO’s, will be asked to give as much input as possible on all issues regarding the Memorial. It must be in writing, in drawings, pictures or emails. We will ask for the names of any vet who lived in Curry County, and died for his country. The Board of Directors of CCVM will review all the requested information at their monthly meetings. The Board is irrelevant without participation of CC Vets. So please, pass this on to any vet you’re acquainted with or give them my phone number below. Phil Colozzi, Commander, American Legion Post 76 541-332-6490
